Was this a good idea? Acting as if I had a boyfriend just to make the exboyfriend jealous?

I'm trying to show my ex that he's not a very huge part of my life and that he's not irreplaceable cuz he's all cocky telling me that I would never find one better then him but I pretended like I had another guy a few weeks later. Should I have done that or should I have gone about my business?
